Pass the Mic

Pass The Mic spotlights the stories and experiences of New Zealanders from migrant and former refugee backgrounds. The first series from 2022 is a community-led collaboration in partnership with Belong Aotearoa, Sport Waitākere and Storyo, hosted by Elina Ashimbayeva. The second series from 2025 focuses on the employment experience of lived experts and was made with funding from the J R McKenzie Trust.

Pass The Mic S2 Episode 6: Carlos Cheung

Dr. Carlos Cheung is a current Member of Parliament for the National Party and the elected representative for Mt Roskill. Originally coming to Aotearoa as an international student, Carlos chose to stay and build his future here. Over the years, he has worked across several different sectors — giving him firsthand experience of changing careers. In this episode, we hear Carlos’ story and his insights on employment in Aotearoa.

Nina has been recognised by the Asian New Zealand Foundation and YWCA as a young person to watch, and in this episode, Nina shares her work with the “Mind The Gap'' campaign and ethnic pay gap reporting.
