Migrants get really frustrated. You have the overseas qualifications, experience and the skills but many NZ employers want NZ experience. Are they biased or too fussy? How can you get NZ experience if the employers dont give you the chance to gain it? This lesson discusses this important issue and gives you many ideas for gaining NZ experience.

Gary has worked in IT and the technical aspects of broadcasting for over 25 years. Gladys is a broadcaster and journalist who has also worked in the health and public sectors. Both have worked in and around Pacific media and broadcasting.

Pass The Mic spotlights the stories and experiences of New Zealanders from migrant and former refugee backgrounds. The first series from 2022 is a community-led collaboration in partnership with Belong Aotearoa, Sport Waitākere and Storyo, hosted by Elina Ashimbayeva. The second series from 2025 focuses on the employment experience of lived experts and was made with funding from the J R McKenzie Trust.
